Maps
If you want to buy a good general map before you leave, try and get hold of one by Freytag & Berndt who publish some of the best glossy fold-outs available depicting Tenerife at a scale of 1:75,000 and La Gomera at 1:35,000. The latter is good enough for hiking , but the former only just about acceptable. If you intend to explore off the beaten track then you're best getting hold of the 1:25,000 scale topographical maps produced by the Servico Geografico del Ejercito ( Cartografia Militar de Espana ). These tend to be fairly up to date, though they often miss off some current trails and include some trails that are no longer in existence. Bookshops on both Tenerife and La Gomera (particularly in Valle Gran Rey) should stock most good maps; but for the Servico Geografico maps, you'll need to head for the military offices ( Capitana ) on Weyler Square in Santa Cruz (Mon-Fri 9am-12pm).
