Visas and Red Tape
The rules governing entry to Tenerife are the same as those governing the rest of Spain. Most EU citizens, as well as those from Norway and Iceland, can visit Spain for up to ninety days with just their national identity card or passport. Currently, citizens of the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand can also enter for up to ninety days with just a passport, but visa requirements do change and it is always advisable to check the situation before leaving home. EU nationals wishing to stay longer than ninety days need to apply for a permiso de residencia (EU residence permit) in Spain. The initial residence permit is valid for one year, after which you'll need an extension. Applications for both are made at the closest police station to where you intend to live and need to be accompanied by proof of sufficient funds (currently ?30 per day) for your intended stay, or proof of employment either in the form of a contract ( contrato de trabajo ) or tax-office registration details if you're self-employed. Non-EU nationals can usually get ninety-day extensions to their visa, again by applying to a police station and showing proof of funds. Longer stays require a special visa. Contact your Spanish embassy or consulate for current information.
