Settler Society and The Development Of Agriculture
Having founded La Laguna and made it the island's capital, in 1498 de Lugo married the Governoress of La Gomera, Beatriz de Bobadilla , and settled down to the task of clearing the debts of his military campaigns, at the same time milking Tenerife of its agricultural potential. In return for his own financing of his expeditions, the Spanish monarchy permitted de Lugo to dispense land and water rights on the island, which he did to the benefit of his financiers. Many of these were Italian merchants , who moved into the island's capital and built grand town houses incorporating a variety of cultural influences. Distinctive woodwork from Muslim architectural traditions reflects the origins of many of the local craftsmen and many buildings show a distinct mudejar influence, exemplified by the island's trademark ornate wooden balconies and the impressive artesonado wooden ceilings in many of the island's churches.
