Tibidabo

If the views from the Castell de Montjuic are good, those from the 550-metre heights of Mount Tibidabo - which forms the northwestern boundary of the city - are legendary. On one of those mythical clear days you can see across to Montserrat and the Pyrenees, and out to sea even as far as Mallorca. The very name is based on this view, taken from the Temptations of Christ in the wilderness, when Satan led him to a high place and offered him everything which could be seen: Haec omnia tibi dabo si cadens adoraberis me (All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me).

At the summit there's a modern church topped with a huge statue of Christ, and - immediately adjacent - a wonderful Parc d'Atraccions , where the amusements are scattered around several levels of the mountaintop, connected by landscaped paths and gardens. It's a good mix of traditional rides and high-tech attractions, at all of which large queues form at peak times.

The park is open mid-late April & mid-Sept to late Oct Sat & Sun noon-8pm; May Fri 10am-6pm, Sat & Sun noon-8pm; June Thurs & Fri 10am-6pm, Sat & Sun noon-9pm; July & Aug Mon-Thurs & Sun noon-10pm, Fri & Sat noon-1am; early Sept Sat & Sun noon-10pm. There are various admission charges depending on what you want to do: entry with five ride tickets ?7.30, and with this you pay separately for each ride and attraction (up to ?4.50); if you want to go on everything, or even just three or four rides, it'll be cheaper to

buy a ticket for ?14.50. You can also visit the Museu d'Automates del Tibidabo (free with entry to the fairground) to view a collection of coin-operated fairground machines still in working order.

Tibidabo can end up being be a fairly expensive day out, since drinks and snacks inside are pricey, too - on a hot day taking a bottle of water at least is a good idea. Immediately outside the park there's a restaurant , which is packed with families on Sundays, and a bar.
