In 1859, as the plans for the Eixample took shape, a wide, new avenue was also constructed, cutting through the old town. This was the Via Laietana , running roughly parallel to the Ramblas. Nowadays it delineates the eastern extent of the Barri Gotic, but not to push on over the road into the equally dense network of medieval streets beyond would be a mistake. True, there isn't the same concentration of preserved buildings here as in the Barri Gotic, but there is the major attraction of the Museu Picasso , while the street on which it lies (c/Montcada) and the church at the end of it (Santa Maria del Mar) encapsulate some of Barcelona's most perfect Catalan-Gothic features.
