From the Placa d'Espanya , with it's striking 47-metre-high twin towers, the imposing Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina heads up towards Montjuic, flanked by the huge exhibition halls of the Fira Barcelona Montjuic. At the end of the avenue you come to Placa de Carles Buigas, at the base of the hill up to the Palau Nacional and dominated by the Font Magica (Thurs-Sun 8pm-midnight; sound and light show 10.30pm; free). On four evenings a week the fountain becomes the protagonist of an impressive if slightly kitsch sound and light show when the brightly coloured water appears to dance to the strains of Holst and Abba. If you head down Avinguda del Marques de Comillas, to the right of the fountain, you'll come upon Barcelona's newest museum, the Foundation de la Caixa's Casarramona .
