Avila is quite a nexus with road and rail routes to Salamanca and Valladolid, from where you can get to just about anywhere in northern Spain, while to the east Segovia is less than two hours away by bus. Within striking distance, too, to the south, is the beautiful Sierra de Gredos. On the Salamanca route , both road and rail routes pass through Penaranda de Bracamonte , a crumbling old town with a couple of large plazas and ancient churches. From here, if you have your own vehicle, you can continue to Salamanca on a slightly longer route through Alba de Tormes . Santa Teresa died here, and the Carmelite convent which contains the remains of her body (not much of it to judge by the number of relics scattered around Spain) is another major target of pilgrimage. There are the remains of a castle here too, and several other interesting churches. Heading north towards Valladolid , road and rail both pass through Medina del Campo with its beautiful castle.
