Around Madrid Fiestas

Fiestas

FEBRUARY

First Sunday in the month   Santa Agueda women's festival in Segovia, when married women take over city administration and parade and celebrate in traditional costume. Occurs to an extent throughout the province, especially in Zamarramala just outside the city.

Week before Lent   Carnaval is the excuse for lively fiestas all over the place.

MARCH/APRIL

Holy Week   Semana Santa is celebrated everywhere, but with great formality and processions in Toledo and an impressive Passion play on Saturday in the Plaza Mayor at Chinchon.

Mid-April   Fiesta del Anis y del Vino in Chinchon.

MAY

Corpus Christi (variable - the Thursday after Trinity, which sometimes falls in June) sees a very solemn, costumed religious procession in Toledo.

JUNE

24-29   San Juan y San Pedro . A lively procession with floats and music in Segovia.

30 In Hita (north of Guadalajara) the fiesta has a medieval theme, with performances of old theatre, feasts, dances, and sporting events including falconry and bull-lancing.

JULY

There's a big festival in Avila in mid-July ; a rowdy affair with bullfights, music and dances. In Segovia the festival runs throughout July and August , with music, folk and dance festivities.

AUGUST

15 Celebrations for the Virgen de la Asuncion in Chinchon include an encierro , with bulls running through the street.

25 Entertaining fiestas in La Granja (near Segovia; one of the rare occasions on which the monumental fountains in the palace gardens are switched on) and Orgaz (near Toledo).

The third week of the month marks the August fiestas in Toledo, in honour of the Virgen del Sagrario ; amazing fireworks on the final weekend.

28 Bull running in Cuellar (north of Segovia) - some of the oldest in Spain.

In the last week in the month there are some spectacular parades of giant puppets, and plenty of theatre, music and dance in Alcala de Henares.
