East of the capital there's considerably less to detain you. The only tempting day-trips are to the old university town of Alcala de Henares , Cervantes's birthplace and, for Baroque enthusiasts, to Nuevo Baztan , an eighteenth-century new town planned by Jose de Churriguera. Further afield, the largely modern city of Guadalajara has little to recommend it, although the region southwest of here, the Alcarria , has its charms, especially if you want to follow the footsteps of Spain's Nobel prizewinner, Camilo Jose Cela, who described his wanderings here in the 1940s in his book, Viaje a la Alcarria .
