Around the coast from Paloma campsite are extensive ruins of the Roman town of BOLONIA , or Baelo Claudia as the Romans knew it, where you can make out the remains of three temples and a theatre, as well as a forum and numerous houses (July-Aug 10am-1.30pm & 4.30-8pm; rest of year 10am-2.30pm & 4-5.30pm; closed Mon; ?1.50, free to EU citizens). The site can be reached down a small side road which turns off the main Cadiz road 15km after Tarifa. There's also a fine beach here with bars and eating places and a pleasant place to stay , Hostal Baelo , c/El Lentiscal 15 (tel 956 688 562; ?36-48). Alternatively it's a good walk along the coast from either Paloma or, from the west, Zahara de los Atunes (3-4hr). ZAHARA DE LOS ATUNES , a small fishing village beginning to show signs of development, has a fabulous 8km-long strand, soon to be backed by the almost obligatory paseo maritimo (promenade), currently under construction. Best of a number of places to stay is the friendly Hostal Monte Mar , c/Penon 12 (tel 956 439 047; ?27-36), bang on the beach, with sea-view balcony rooms. Camping is also feasible at Bahia de la Plata (tel 956 439 040) at the south end of the beach, but don't forget the insect repellent.
