Sierra Nevada

The mountains of the Sierra Nevada , designated Andalucia's second national park in 1999, rise to the south of Granada, a startling backdrop to the city, snowcapped for much of the year and offering good trekking and also skiing from late November until late May. The ski slopes are at Solynieve ("Sun and Snow", aka Pradollano), an unimaginative, developed resort just 28km away from the city centre. From here, you can make the two- to three-hour trek up to Veleta (3470m), the second highest peak of the range (and of the Iberian peninsula); this is a perfectly feasible day-trip from Granada by bus. For more serious enthusiasts, the renowned trek across the sierra is the Ruta de los Tres Mil .

map of the Sierra Nevada including the lower slopes of the Alpujarras is the one co-produced by the Instituto Geografico Nacional and the Federacion Espanola de Montanismo (1:50,000), which is generally available in Granada. A new 1:40,000 map and guide set , Sierra Nevada and La Alpujarra , published in English by Editorial Alpina is also good. The turismo in Granada can advise on snow conditions in the mountains, as can the Sierra Nevada Club (tel 958 249 119).
