The classic Ruta Integral de los Tres Mil , a complete traverse of all the sierra's peaks over 3000m high, starts in Jerez del Marquesado on the north side of the Sierra Nevada (due south of Guadix) and finishes in Lanjaron, in the Alpujarras; an exhausting three- to four-day itinerary. Taking four days entails overnight stays near Puntal de Vacares, in the Siete Lagunas valley, at the Refugio de la Caldera , and at the Cerro Caballo hut. Slightly shorter, and more practicable, variations involve a start from the Vadillo refuge in the Estrella valley (northwest of Vacares), or from Trevelez in the Alpujarras, and a first overnight at Siete Lagunas. Whichever way you choose, be aware that the section between Veleta and Elorrieta calls for rope, an ice axe (and crampons before June) and good scrambling skills. There is another difficult section between Penon Colorado and Cerro de Caballo. If you're not up to this, it is possible to detour round the Veleta-Elorrieta section, but you will end up on the ridge flanking the Lanjaron river valley on the east rather than on the west; here there is a single cement hut (the Refugio Forestal ), well placed for the final day's walk to Lanjaron. For any major exploration of the Sierra Nevada , it is essential to take a tent, proper gear and ample food. It's a serious mountain and you should be prepared for the eventuality of not being able to reach or find the huts (which are marked correctly on the 1:50,000 map) or the weather turning nasty.
