The best way to experience the High Alpujarras is to walk, and there are a number of paths between Orgiva and Cadiar, at the furthest reaches of the western valleys. Equip yourself with a compass and the Instituto Geografico Nacional/Federacion Espanola de Montanismo 1:50,000 map or the Editorial Alpina map, which cover all the territory from Orgiva up to Berchules (Alpina) and Berja (IGN/FEM) respectively. Alternatively, a bus leaves daily from Lanjaron at 1pm and winds through all the upper Alpujarran villages; hitching, too, is generally good in these rural areas, though cars are few and far between.
