Most conspicuous from the heights is Malaga's peculiar, unfinished Catedral (April-Sept 10am-6.45pm; Oct-March 10am-12.45pm & 4-6.45pm; closed Sun except for services; ?1.80). Constructed between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, it is still lacking a tower on the west front because a radical malagueno bishop donated the earmarked money to the American War of Independence against the British. Unfortunately - and despite its huge scale - it also lacks any real inspiration and is distinguished only by an intricately carved and ultrarealistic seventeenth-century silleria (choir stall) by noted sculptor Pedro de Mena. The former Museo de Bellas Artes, just around the corner from the cathedral on c/San Agustin, is to be reborn as the new Museo Picasso , housing 182 major works purchased (at a bargain price) from Picasso's daughter-in-law Christine Ruiz-Picasso, who felt that her inheritance should go to the artist's birthplace. The date of reopening is uncertain due to archeological discoveries made during the renovation of the old Bellas Artes building, the former palace of the Counts of Buenavista. For the latest information check with the turismo. The Bellas Artes collection - including works by Murillo and Zurbaran - will eventually be housed in the old Aduana building on the Paseo del Parque which it will share with a new archeological museum. A selection of works from the Bellas Artes collection is currently being displayed in the Aduana (Tues 3-8pm, Wed-Fri 9am-8pm, Sat-Sun 9am-3pm; free); consult the turismo or www.andalucia.org for the latest news. Picasso was born a couple of hundred metres away from his new museum in the Plaza de la Merced, where the Casa Natal de Picasso (Mon-Sat 11am-2pm & 5-8pm, Sun 11am-2pm; free) is home to the Fundacion Picasso, a centre for scholars researching the painter's life and work. There's a photo display of Picasso's life here, as well as occasional exhibitions, but despite welcoming staff there's not an awful lot more to see. It was in the bars surrounding the square that the infant Pablo saw the first solid shape that he wanted to commit to paper: churros , those oil-steeped fritters that malaguenos love to dip into their breakfast chocolate. A recent addition to the city's museums is the Museo Municipal , Paseo de Reding 1 (Mon-Sat 10am-8pm; free) which is used to house visiting exhibitions from abroad. It's always worth checking out what's on here as recent offerings have included major exhibitions of Flemish and Italian art.
