Costa del Sol

The outstanding feature of the Costa del Sol is its ease of access. Hundreds of charter flights arrive here every week, and it's often possible to get an absurdly cheap ticket from other cities in Europe, particularly London. Malaga airport is positioned midway between Malaga, the main city on the coast, and Torremolinos , its most grotesque resort. You can easily reach either town by taking the electric train which runs every thirty minutes (daily 7am-11.45pm) along the coast between Malaga and Fuengirola . Granada, Cordoba and Sevilla are all within easy reach of Malaga; so too, and covered in this section, are Ronda and the "White Towns" to the west, and a handful of relatively restrained coastal resorts to the east. Beaches along this stretch are generally grit-grey rather than golden, but the sea is reliably clean, after a lot of work on the sewerage system.

Economically, the coastal hinterland is undergoing a gradual resurgence, in contrast to the general decline in the rest of Andalucia. In recent years the cultivation of subtropical fruits such as mangos, papayas, guavas, lychees and avocados has replaced the traditional orange, lemon and almond trees. Most farm labourers, however, can't afford coastal land; those who buy are often former migrants to France and Germany who have been forced to return because of the unemployment situation there
