One of the sites you're steered to near Postojna is PREDJAMSKI GRAD (May-Sept 9am-6pm; Oct-April 10am-4pm; 900SIT), 7km from Postojna and well signposted from the caves. It's walkable if you're in the mood or you can book a taxi through Kompas; otherwise it's only accessible with your own transport or on an organized trip. Pushed up high against a cave entrance in the midst of karst landscape, the sixteenth-century castle is damp and melancholy, unimproved by a museum holding a lacklustre collection of odds and ends from this and an earlier castle that stood nearby. The previous castle was the home of one Erazem , a colourful brigand knight of the fifteenth century who spent his days waylaying the merchant caravans that passed through the region. Sheriff of Nottingham to his Robin Hood was the governor of Trieste, who laid exasperated siege to the castle for over a year. Secure in his defensive position and supplied by a secret passage to the outside world, Erazem taunted the governor by tossing fresh cherries and the occasional roast ox over the wall to show he was far from beaten. Such hubris couldn't go unnoticed, and Erazem finally met with one of the more ignominious deaths on record: he was blown to bits by a cannonball while sitting on the castle loo. There are guided tours of the cave below the castle (daily May-Sept 11am, 1pm, 3pm & 5pm; 700SIT, 1200SIT joint ticket with castle).
