After Postojna, Slovenia's most emblematic tourist draw is probably LIPICA . 7km west of the drab railway-junction town of Divaca near the Italian border, Lipica gave its name to the Lipizzaner horses that are associated with the Spanish Riding School of Vienna. There are three hundred horses here, the results of fastidious breeding that can be dated back to 1580, when the Austrian Archduke Charles established the farm in order to add Spanish and Arab blood to the Lipizzaner strain that was first used by the Romans for chariot races. Tours are given round the stud farm (April-Oct 9/10am-5/6pm; Nov-Mar 11am-3pm; 1100SIT; www.k-lipica.si ), and the horses give the elegant displays for which they're famous (May-Sept Tues, Fri & Sun at 3pm; Oct & April Fri & Sun at 3pm; 1500SIT). If you've any horse-riding ability, it's also possible to go on rides around the region - a wonderfully relaxing way to explore the area. Public transport is meagre: a few buses run from Divaca weekday mornings, but you have little time to look around before catching the last bus back. Alternatives include spending a night here in one of the (expensive) hotels, or joining a weekend excursion run by the big high-street travel agents in Ljubljana or Portoroz. One-day tours combining Postojna and Lipica currently cost around GBP35/$50 per person. There are two good, but pricey hotels in the stable complex, the Klub and Maestoso (both tel 05/739-1580; GBP20-25/$32-40/?36-45).
