Twenty-five kilometres up the valley from Kobarid, the village of BOVEC straggles between imperious mountain ridges. A useful base for the Soca Valley, it has more in the way of accommodation than Kobarid because of its status as a winter ski resort. It's also the location of most of the rafting and adventure sport companies, and is the departure point for any number of alpine walks. The quickest route up into the mountains is provided by the gondola ( gondolna zicnica ; daily July, Aug & Dec-May; 2200SIT return) at the southern entrance to the village, which ascends to the pasture-cloaked Mt Kanin over to the west. The tourist office is in the Bovec Community Centre at Trg golobarskih zrtev 8 (July & Aug daily 9am-8pm; rest of year Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, Sat & Sun 9am-2pm; tel 05/384-1919, www.bovec.si ). Private rooms (GBP5-10/$8-16/?9-18) and apartments are available from either Gotour , at Trg golobarskih zrtev 50 (Mon-Sat 9-5pm; tel 05/389-6366 , www.gotourbovec.com ), or Avrigo , at no. 47 (Mon-Sat 8am-6pm; tel 05/384-1150). The nearest campsite is Polovnik , Ledina 8 (tel 05/388-6069); follow the road north out of the village and it's signed to the right after 500m. There are plenty of places to eat and drink on and around the main square, although the atmosphere in all of them ranges from the boisterous to the deathly depending on how many tourists are in town. Stari Kovac, down from the main square on Rupa 3, has a long list of inexpensive pizzas alongside the usual schnitzels. Soca Rafting, up the road from the tourist office in the Sports Centre (tel 05/389-6200 , www.arctur.si/soca_rafting ), is the biggest of many companies grouped around the main square offering rafting trips (with prices working out much the same as in Kobarid). It also organizes kayaking and canyoning and rents out mountain bikes.
