The currency in Slovakia is the Slovak crown or Slovenska koruna (abbreviated to Sk), which is divided into 100 halier (h). Coins come in the denominations 10h, 20h, 50h, 1Sk, 2Sk, 5Sk and 10Sk; notes as 20Sk, 50Sk, 100Sk, 500Sk, 1000Sk and 5000Sk. Although the Slovak crown is convertible, the amount you can take out of the country is limited, so check with customs if you plan to export large sums. Note that exchange rates continue to fluctuate. Travellers' cheques in US dollars, Deutschmarks or Sterling are undoubtedly the safest way of carrying your money, though it's a good idea to keep at least some hard currency in cash for emergencies. Exchange offices ( zmenaren ) can be found in all major hotels, travel agencies and department stores. Credit cards are accepted in most hotels and restaurants and some shops, and you can also get cash on your plastic from the ATMs in both small towns and cities - EuroCard and MasterCard are most widely accepted.
