To many, West Lothian is a poor relative to the rolling, rich farmland of East and Midlothian, with a landscape dominated by motorways, industrial estates and giant hillocks of ochre-coloured mine waste called "bings". However, anywhere this close to the centres of power through Scottish history would find it hard not to have something to show for itself, and in the ruined royal palace at Linlithgow the area boasts one of Scotland's more magnificent ruins. The village of South Queensferry (strictly speaking no longer part of West Lothian) lies under the considerable shadow of the Forth rail and road bridges. A mile or two beyond South Queensferry is Hopetoun House , an impressive stately home.
