A couple of miles south of Stirling centre, all but surrounded by suburban housing, the Bannockburn Heritage Centre (daily: April-Oct 10am-5.30pm; March, Nov & Dec 11am-4pm; NTS; GBP2.50) commemorates the most famous battle in Scottish history, when King Robert the Bruce won his mighty victory over the English at the Battle of Bannockburn on June 24, 1314. It was this battle, the climax of the Wars of Independence, which united the Scots under Bruce and led to independence under the Declaration of Arbroath (1320) and the Treaty of Northampton (1328).
The centre shows an audiovisual presentation on the battle and the background to it, highlighting the brilliantly innovative tactics Bruce employed in mustering his army to defeat a much
larger English force. Outside is a stirring equestrian statue of Bruce, set against the skyline of Stirling Castle, the English army's approach to which he was intentionally blocking. The actual site of the main battle is, oddly, still a matter of debate. Most agree that it didn't take place near the present visitor centre; the most cogent theory argues that it took place on a boggy carse a mile or so to the west. Buses #51 and #52 leave for Bannockburn from Murray Place every half-hour.
