Nestling in a fold of the Ochils on the northern bank of the small River Devon, where mountain waters rush off the hills, affluent DOLLAR is known for its Academy, founded in 1820 with a substantial bequest from local lad John MacNabb, and now one of Scotland's most respected private schools; its pupils and staff account for around a third of the town's population. Above the town, the dramatic chasm of Dollar Glen is commanded by Castle Campbell (April-Sept daily 9.30am-6.30pm; Oct-March Mon-Sat 9.30am-4.30pm, Thurs & Fri closes noon, Sun 2-4.30pm; NTS/HS; GBP2.80), formerly, and still unofficially, known as Castle Gloom - a fine and evocative tag but, prosaically, a derivation of "Gloume", an old Gaelic name. A one-and-a-half-mile road leads up from the main street, but becomes very narrow, very steep, and stops short of the castle, with only limited parking at the top. There is a marked
walk through the glen to the castle, past mossy crags and rushing streams.
The castle came into the hands of the Campbells in 1481, who changed its name from Castle Gloom in 1489. In 1654 the castle was burnt by Cromwell's troops; however, the oldest part of the castle, the fine fifteenth-century tower built by Sir Colin Campbell, survived the fire. You can walk round the roof of the tower, where there's a wonderful vista of the hills behind the castle, and down the glen to Dollar
