The tranquil eastern shore is far better for walking and appreciating the loch's natural beauty than the western. The dead-end B837 from Drymen will take you halfway up the east bank, while the West Highland Way sticks close to the shores for the entire length of the loch, beginning at the tiny lochside settlement of BALMAHA . Balmaha has a Loch Lomond Park Centre (Easter-Oct daily 10am-6pm; tel 01360/870470), one of two principal information points on the shores of the loch (the other is in Luss). You can stay at purpose-built Oak Tree Inn (tel 01360/870357; GBP50-60), opposite the big car park, either in one of their double rooms or in their cheaper bunk-bed quads.
Public transport stops at Balamaha, but a couple of miles or so further up the road, at Cashel, is a lovely secluded Forestry Commission campsite (tel 01360/870234, ; April-Oct). Another three miles
north through the woods brings you to ROWARDENNAN , a scattered settlement which sits below the mountain Ben Lomond. Passenger ferries (Easter-Sept 3 daily) cross between Inverbeg and Rowardennan, where accommodation is available at the Rowardennan Hotel (tel 01360/870273; GBP70-90), whose lawns slope down to the shore, and, half a mile beyond, at a wonderfully situated SYHA hostel (tel 01360/870259, ; March-Oct), strategically placed on the West Highland Way.
