From Perth both the railway and main A9 trunk road carry much of the traffic heading into the Highlands, often speeding straight through some of Perthshire's most attractive countryside in its eagerness to get to the bleaker country to the north. Perthshire has been dubbed " Big Tree Country " by the tourist board in recognition of some magnificent woodland in the area, including a number of individual trees
which rank among Europe's oldest, tallest, and certainly most handsome specimens. Many of these are found around the valley - or "strath" - of the River Tay as it heads towards the sea from attractive Loch Tay, set up among the high Breadalbane mountains. Near the eastern end of the loch is the prosperous small town of Aberfeldy ; from here the Tay drifts southeast between the unspoilt twin villages of Dunkeld and Birnam before meandering its way past Perth.
