The A985 crosses the Forth Road Bridge, with unattractive views of the shipyard at Inverkeithing and the naval dock at Rosyth (newly commissioned as a port for ferry crossings to Zeebrugge in Belgium), before heading west along the river to CULROSS (pronounced "coorus"), one of Scotland's most picturesque settlements. The town's development began in the fifth century with the arrival of St Serf on the northern side of the Forth at Cuileann Ros ("point where holly grows"), and is also said to have been the birthplace of St Mungo, founder of Glasgow cathedral. Culross today is in excellent condition, thanks to the work of the NTS, which has been renovating its whitewashed, red-tiled buildings since 1932.
For an excellent introduction to the burgh's history, make your first stop in Culross the National Trust Visitor Centre (Easter week & June-Aug daily 10am-5pm; April, May & Sept daily 12.30-4.30pm; Oct Sat & Sun 12.30-4.30pm; joint ticket for Town House, Palace and Study GBP5), located in the Town House on the main road in the centre. The focal point
of the community is the nearby ochre-coloured Culross Palace (same hours), built by wealthy coal merchant George Bruce in the late sixteenth century; it's not a palace at all - its name comes from the Latin palatium , or "hall" - but a grand and impressive house, with lots of small rooms and connecting passageways. The garden is planted with grasses, herbs and vegetables of the period, carefully grown from seed. The cafe (11am-4.30pm) serves home-made food.
