ANSTRUTHER , the largest settlement and least attractive fishing harbour in the East Neuk, is home to the wonderfully unpretentious Scottish Fisheries Museum (April-Oct Mon-Sat 10am-5.30pm, Sun 11am-5pm; Nov-March Mon-Sat 10am-4.30pm, Sun noon-4.30pm; GBP3.50), quite in keeping with the no-frills integrity of the area in general. Set in an atmospheric complex of sixteenth- to nineteenth-century buildings with timber ceilings and wooden floors, it chronicles the history of the Scottish fishing and whaling industries with ingenious displays, including a whole series of exquisite ships' models built on

site by a resident model maker. Anstruther's helpful tourist office (Easter-Sept Mon, Fri & Sat 10am-5pm, Tues-Thurs 10am-1pm & 2-5pm, Sun 11am-4pm; tel 01333/311073) is next to the museum. There is a fine fish restaurant , the Cellar , at 24 East Green (tel 01333/310378), in one of the village's oldest buildings, once a cooperage and smokehouse. For fish and chips that are reputed to be the best in Fife, head for the Anstruther Fish Bar , 44 The Shore.
