The bulbous, hilly end of Kintyre, to the south of Campbeltown, features some of the most spectacular scenery on the whole peninsula, mixed with large swaths of Lowland-style farmland. SOUTHEND itself, a bleak, blustery spot, comes as something of a disappointment, though it does have a golden sandy beach. Below the cliffs to the west of the beach, a ruined thirteenth-century chapel marks the alleged arrival point of St Columba prior to his trip to Iona, and on a rocky knoll nearby a pair of footprints carved into the rock are known as Columba's footprints , though only one is actually of ancient origin.

Most people venture south of Campbeltown to make a pilgrimage to the Mull of Kintyre - the nearest Britain gets to Ireland, whose coastline, just twelve miles away, appears remarkably close on fine days. Although the Mull was made famous by the mawkish number-one hit by sometime local resident Paul McCartney, with the help of the Campbeltown Pipe Band, there's nothing specifically to see in this godforsaken storm-racked spot but the view. The roads up to the " Gap " (1150ft) - where you must leave your car - and particularly down to the lighthouse, itself 300ft above the ocean waves, are terrifyingly tortuous.

Southend still has a pub , the Argyll Arms , unremarkable except for the fact that it has a post office inside

it. The only hotel has been closed for a long time now and cuts a forlorn figure, set back from the bay, but there are a couple of excellent B&Bs : Ormsary Farm (tel 01586/830665; under GBP40; April-Sept), a small dairy farm up Glen Breakerie, and the nearby picturesque croft of Low Cattadale (tel 01586/830205; under GBP40; March-Nov). Camping is possible right in the field right by the beach, run by Machribeg Farm (tel 01586/830249; Easter-Sept).
