Port Bannatyne is a village by the sea in north Bute just south of the highland wilderness. Great for sailing, fishing, walking, cycling and seeing the rich bird-life, deer, hares and wild goats. Right by the sea is an old stone inn called The Russian Tavern run by Russians. They serve Real Ales direct from the cask, or imported Russian beers. The food is all freshly cooked from fresh produce, which includes the seafood caught in the bay. 5 economic guest rooms. Just the job and nice people too. Booked in for one night and stayed for four!
Buses leave outside ,for a minor ferry over to Argyll, so this is a good stepping-stone into the highlands and islands of west Scotland from
Glasgow or Prestwick airports. Main ferry to
The Isle of Bute leaves from Wemyss Bay on the A78, linked by rail from Paisley (Glasgow Airport) and Glasgow Central Station. There's a direct Fastbus from Prestwick airport, the 585
running twice an hour. The Isle of Bute is well worth visiting...the west and north bits are best.
