About 3km beyond Tsarskoe Selo you will come to Pavlovsk (same trains and minibuses as for Tsarskoe Selo), built on land which Catherine presented to her son Paul in 1777, to congratulate him on the birth of her grandson. The Great Palace (daily except Fri 10am-5pm; $5) is a monument to the taste and habits of Paul's wife Maria Fyodorovna, who collected works of fine and applied art, and who was herself a keen sculptor and carver of cameos. Light, airy, and feminine, the palace is renowned for its superb collection of eighteenth-century furniture and interior fittings. It dominates the hill above the dips and inclines of the landscape around the River Slavyanka. Pavlovsk park is perhaps the most beloved of all the parks around the city by inhabitants of St Petersburg, who walk here and feed the squirrels in summer, and ski through the grounds in winter. The palace has a pleasant cafe, but for a truly kitsch experience, lunch at Podvorie at 16 Filtrovskoe shosse, just outside the park near the station (tel 812/465 1399), a pseudo-medieval complex with a folk show (accepts payment by card).
