Piata Unirii (Square of Union), midway along Bulevardul Unirii in the Centru Civic, is an oversized expanse of concrete dominated by traffic. It is notable only as a key metro interchange, as the site of the city's main department store, the Unirea, and of its first McDonald's , and as the best place to view the Palace of Parliament. The sixth-floor cafe in the Unirea department store offers good views of the city. Immediately to the east of Piata Unirii stands the large, domed hall of Unirea market (Mon-Sat 6am-8pm, Sun 6am-noon). The market is very popular and there are always huge queues for its fish, meat and dairy produce; buying fruit and vegetables from the stalls outside (which also trade on Sunday afternoons) is a less frustrating, if more expensive, business. You'll also find intriguing wooden, ceramic and enamel household items here. The market's fifth-floor cafe offers good views of the city. In the backstreets to the east of the market are hidden the Jewish Choral Temple , Str. Sf Vineri 9, and the Great Synagogue , Str. Mamulari 3; the latter houses a museum of Jewish history (Wed & Sun 9.30am-1pm). There are still around four thousand Jews in Bucharest. The community is now reasserting its presence, but it is an ageing population and declining by several hundred a year.
