North of the Praca dos Restauradores are the city's principal gardens, the Parque Eduardo VII , most easily approached by metro to Rotunda. Though there are some pleasant cafes here, the park's big attractions are the Estufas (daily 9am-4.30/5.30pm; ?1.10), huge and wonderful glasshouses filled with tropical plants, flamingo pools, and endless varieties of palms and cacti. The Museu Calouste Gulbenkian (Tues-Sun 10am-5pm; ?2.50), the great museum of Portugal, is ten minutes' walk north of the Parque Eduardo VII - take bus #16, #31 or #46 from the Rossio, or the metro to Palhava or Praca de Espanha. Established by the Armenian oil magnate Calouste Gulbenkian, the Fundacao Calouste Gulbenkian runs this amazing complex - featuring an orchestra, three concert halls and two galleries for temporary exhibitions - as well as financing work in all spheres of Portuguese cultural life, in even the smallest towns. This showpiece museum is divided into two distinct parts - the first devoted to Egyptian, Greco-Roman, Islamic and Oriental arts, the second to European, including paintings from all the major schools. Ghirlandaio's Portrait of a Young Woman is followed by outstanding portraits by Rubens and Rembrandt, while Fragonard ushers in an excellent showing of work from France, featuring Corot, Manet and Monet. There's also a stunning room full of Art Nouveau jewellery by Rene Lalique. Across the gardens, the separate Centro de Arte Moderna (Tues 2-6pm, Wed-Sun 10am-6pm; ?2.50) has all the big names on the twentieth-century Portuguese scene.
