Arrival and Information
The wide open expanse of the Wisla River is the most obvious aid to orientation . Almost everything you will want to see lies on the western bank, with the Stare Miasto (Old Town) squatting on high ground to the north, and the modern commercial heart of Warsaw, the Srodmiescie district, stretching out to the south. Linking the two is the two-kilometre-long street known as Krakowskie Przedmescie (which changes name to Nowy Swiat in its lower reaches), the city's main artery of tourist traffic, which cuts through the centre from north to south. The main points of arrival are all within easy reach of the city centre. The city's notorious taxi drivers are at their worst at the airport - even the officially registered ones may well try to sting you for up to 100zl for the ride into town. Settle the price (which shouldn't be more than around 20zl by day, 30zl at night) before setting off. The cheapest way of getting a taxi into town is to order one from MPT (tel 919) or Super Taxi (tel 9622) - they usually turn up within ten minutes, and charge a fair rate. If you choose to flag down a cab, get one bearing the name of the company followed by "taxi" and the number; the dodgier ones just say "taxi".
