Walking In The Park
The easiest approach to Babia Gora is from the Zawoja-Polanicze car park, which lies on the Zawoja-Jablonka road. On foot, it can be reached by the blue trail , leading gently upwards from the village through the woods to the Markowe Szczawiny refuge (tel 033/877 5105), which serves hot meals and has dormitory accommodation. If time is limited, it's best to switch here to the yellow trail , which takes you directly up to Diablak (1725m), the highest peak in the range, enabling you to see a good cross-section of scenery en route - beware that there's one place on this route where you have to make a fixed ladder ascent. From the top, which forms part of the international boundary with Slovakia, there's a sweeping panoramic view that stretches on (the regrettably few) clear days as far as the Tatras. It's then a comfortable descent back to the car park by the red trail ; this offers the best views of the main peak, and should be used in both directions if you're at all wary of sheer drops. If you have more time at your disposal, you can see the whole massif in one long day by continuing west from the summit of Diablak along the green trail, switching to the red to go back to the refuge, then returning to Zawoja by the black trail.
