East of the edge of the Las Wolski about 5km west of the centre along ul. Ksiecia Jozefa, up ul. Jodlowa and a steep climb of the hill north through the woods takes you up to the main university conference centre . The first building you encounter is the elegant palatial structure that the city's Nazi wartime ruler Hans Frank planned to convert into his personal residence. Round the back of the main building there's a bar-restaurant, U Ziyada (tel 012/421 9830 or 421 9831), that's popular with city folk as an out-of-town dining and drinking spot, especially during the summer. And understandably so: the main balcony offers a superb vantage point from which to take in the tranquil rural surroundings. In good weather, the views south are fantastic, with the Tatras visible in the distance on a really clear summer's day, and it's hard to believe you're still relatively close to the city centre. Unless you have your own transport, you'll have to rely on a taxi to get here - if the driver doesn't know the way, "Instytut Badan Polonijnych" should do the trick; the cost of the journey (approximately 40zl each way) is more than justified by the experience.
