Housed in a large concrete block at al. 3 Maja 1, a couple of minutes west of the university district along ul. Pilsudskiego, the Muzeum Narodowe (National Museum; Mon noon-6pm, Tues-Sun 10am-6pm; 5zl) features permanent exhibitions of a wide selection of painting and sculpture from the 1890s and beyond. The turn-of-the-twentieth-century Mloda Polska movement is particularly well represented here, with a number of notable works by Wyspianski, including the designs for his windows in Wawel cathedral, as well as a number of other major Polish artists including Mehoffer, Witkiewicz and Slewinski. The museum also presents a diverse range of roving exhibitions, some of them major national cultural events, so it's always worth checking what's on in the local listings. Another essential stopoff on any Mloda Polska tour of Krakow is the Dom Mehoffera (Mehoffer House), a short walk north of the Muzeum Narodowe at Krupnicza 26 (Tues, Thurs-Sun 10am-3.30pm, Wed 10am-6pm; 5zl; free on Sun). Occupying the house where Wyspianski's friend and professional rival Jozef Mehoffer lived and worked, it's stuffed with belle-epoque furnishings, pictures of old Krakow, and Mehoffer's own artworks. Portraits of contemporaries cover the walls of rooms decked out in Art Nouveau-inspired curtains and wallpaper (most designed by Mehoffer himself), and among several larger, symbolist works, there's a stained-glass allegory of the immortality of art in which smiling muses hover fairy-like above the pale form of a dying maiden.
