If Wawel Hill and the main square are quintessential old Krakow, the steel mills, smokestacks and grimy housing blocks of Nowa Huta , 10km to the east of the city centre, are the embodiment of the postwar communist dream, and any Krakowiak will want to show them to you. South of the city, a fifteen-kilometre bus ride offers a glimpse of an earlier industrial past in the form of the medieval Wieliczka salt mine , a beautiful, UNESCO-listed site that demands a visit. Tyniec , 15km southwest of the city, out along the river, is a fine Benedictine abbey, which holds organ recitals during the summer.
