Travellers'' Cheques, Credit Cards and Exchange
Although travellers' cheques are the safest way of carrying your money, they're also the least convenient way of getting local currency, with only main banks, Orbis offices and hotels accepting them. They are not accepted by the "kantors" or exchange offices that you see dotted about everywhere. American Express, who now have offices in Warsaw, are a useful alternative and will cash most brands of travellers' cheques, in addition to their own. The number of places providing a travellers' cheque exchange service is actually decreasing, not least with the explosion of ATMs, and transactions can often be a lengthy process. This is not a particular problem in major cities and tourist areas, but cashiers in provincial towns are often so unfamiliar with the procedure that you can be kept waiting for hours. If you're travelling in such areas, you really do need a supply of cash as a backup. Hotels usually charge a hefty commission of five percent, banks around one percent, while American Express will cash cheques free of charge (into local currency only). Credit and charge cards are well established. Access/Mastercard, American Express, Diners Club, Eurocard, JCB and Visa are accepted by an increasing number of travel agents, hotels, restaurants and shops. You can also arrange a cash advance on most of these cards in big banks. After a slow beginning, ATMs are now appearing all over Poland. In any reasonably sized town you'll find them dotted around the main squares, in hotels, outside banks or even inside McDonald's . It is now perfectly viable to arrive in the country with a plastic card and a PIN number and pull out zlotys wherever you go.
