Average Costs
The reforms pursued by successive post-1989 governments continue to place economic pressure on ordinary Poles. However, for Western visitors, prices for most goods remain low. You can eat and drink well for GBP10/US$14 or less even at some of the country's best restaurants, though it's becoming increasingly easy to spend GBP15/US$21 or more for a meal, especially if you want to move beyond home cuisine. In a more basic restaurant, a meal can be had for not much more than GBP4/US$5.60, and substantial hot meals are available at milk and snack bars for even less than this - GBP1.50/US$2.20 will often buy a main course. Coffee or tea with cakes in a cafe costs a similarly nominal amount. Prices for public transport are little more than pocket money - even travelling across half the length of the country by train or bus only costs around GBP15/US$21. Similarly, you never have to fork out much more than GBP2/US$2.80 to visit even the most popular tourist sights , with half that the normal asking price. Only if you go for expensive accommodation will your costs start to rise. Here at least there's plenty of opportunity to spend money, with international hotels in the main cities charging up to GBP180/US$250 per night. On the other hand, if you stick to campsites, youth and tourist hostels, you'll seldom spend much more than GBP5/US$7 on a bed. Budget on about twice as much for a room in a private house or in the cheapest hotels.
