Eating, Drinking and Nightlife
There's a fast-growing range of eateries in Vilnius offering everything from Lithuanian to Lebanese cuisine - although the majority of places concentrate on the filling meat-and-potatoes fare common to much of northern Europe and the Baltics. There's often very little difference between eating and drinking venues: bars and cafes invariably serve snacks and meals and these often represent better value for money than white-tablecloth restaurants, where the expense is not always a guarantee of quality. Vilnius has a few clubs and discos that are worth investigating, though you may find you have a better (and cheaper) time in some of the bars listed, where people tend to start dancing after a few beers. Cutting-edge DJ culture is limited to the monthly rave parties organized by hip magazine Ore , but venues change: look out for posters or check the Internet ( www.ore.lt ) for details.
VilniusJankauskas says "Inhabited for centuries, Vilnius today is a multinational city with significant Polish and Russian minorities, about 20% each of them. It used to have a strong Jewish minority before World War II, but most of the Jews from Vilnius got exterminated. After the war the Soviet government expelled most of the remaining Polish population of the city and replaced them with Lithuanian and Russian citizens."
