Practicalities
There's a helpful tourist office just off Laisves aleja at Mickieviciaus 36 (April-Sept Mon-Fri 9am-7pm, Sat 9am-3pm; Oct-March Mon-Fri 9am-6pm; tel 27/323 436, turizmas@takas.lt ) doling out English-language leaflets and a free map. You can also pick up a copy of Kaunas in Your Pocket here ( www.inyourpocket.com ; 4Lt), a very handy little publication produced by the Vilnius in Your Pocket people - also available from bookstores, newspaper kiosks and some hotel foyers. For accommodation the ever-reliable Litinterp , Kumeliu 15-4 (tel 27/228 718, www.litinterp.lt ), can sort you out with a room in the centre for 60Lt single, 100Lt double. Central hotels include the unrenovated but tolerable Monela , Laisves 35 (tel 27/221 791; GBP10-15/$16-24); the gloomy but charmingly olde-worlde Lietuva I , just north of Laisves at Daukanto 21 (tel 27/225 992, metropol@takas.lt ; GBP10-15/$16-24); and the hulking concrete Takijoji Neris , off Laisves to the north at Donelaiaio 27 (tel 27/204 224, takneris@takas.lt ; GBP15-20/$24-32). Real comfort in Kaunas comes at a price: best of the upscale hotels is the friendly Perkuno Namai , in suburban streets east of the train and bus stations at Perkuno 61 (tel 27/320 230, hotel@perkuno-namai.lt ; GBP35-40/$56-64). To eat in style head for Chez Eliza , Vilniaus 30, with an international, French-influenced menu (main courses from 12Lt). For something a little more indigenous try the Berneliu Uzeiga , Valanciaus 9, where you can dine on meat and potatoes in an attractive rustic interior. Pizza Jazz , Laisves aleja 68, does delicious thin-crust pizzas and Mexican dishes at reasonable prices. Cafes and bars are often a good bet for eating too: Avilys , Vilniaus 9, is a chic cellar-bound establishment that has a full range of meals and brews its own beer; Elfu Selsmas , Laisves 93, offers drinking, dining and dancing in faux-rustic surroundings. Fortas , Donelaiao 65, is an Irish pub just off Laisves with bars on three levels. The Skliautai , Rotuses aikste 26, and the nearby B.O. , Muitines 9, are the best places to hook up with a young, arty, bohemian crowd. Los Patrankos , Savanoriu 124, is the biggest and friendliest of the techno-oriented clubs . You can access the Internet at Kavine Internetas, Dauksos 12 (8Lt per hour).
