Riga Arrival, Information and City Transport

Arrival, Information and City Transport

Riga's main train station (Centrala Stacija) and bus station (Autoosta) are just south of Old Riga and within easy walking distance of the centre. The sea passenger terminal (Juras pasazieru stacija) is to the north of the centre. Trams #5, #7 or #9 run from the stop in front of the terminal on Ausekla iela into the centre of town (two stops). Riga airport (Lidosta Riga) is at Skulte, 8km southwest of the centre; bus #22 (0.20Ls) runs approximately every thirty minutes from the airport to the train station between 6am and 10.30pm; a taxi will set you back around 7Ls.

There are tourist offices at the airport (daily 9am-9pm; tel 2/720 7800), and on the Old Town's main square, Ratslaukums (daily 10am-7pm; tel 2/704 4377, tourinfo@riga800.lv ), both of which have leaflets and hotel lists. They also sell the Riga Card (8Ls for 24hrs, 12Ls for 48hrs, 16Ls for 72hrs) which allows unlimited use of public transport, entry to some museums, a guided tour of the city, and discounts in some restaurants - it's worth doing a few sums to see whether it will save you any money on your planned itinerary. Best advice to new arrivals is to purchase a copy of the excellent English-language guide Riga in Your Pocket (0.60Ls; www.inyourpocket.com ), which is available from newsstands and hotel foyers and contains all the information you could possibly require. Riga This Week , available free from hotels, is also useful.

Old Riga is easily walkable, and you can cover the New Town on foot without much effort too. Outlying attractions are easily reached by bus, tram or trolleybus. Flat-fare single-journey tickets cost 0.20Ls and are purchased on board from the conductor. Taxis should cost 0.30Ls per kilometre during the day and 0.40Ls between 10pm and 6am, but watch out for rip-offs or non-functioning meters. The fleet of red Renaults operated by Riga Taxi (tel 2/739 1881) are usually reliable.
