The concentration camp at SALASPILS , 22km southeast of Riga, is where most of Riga's Jewish population perished during World War II. Around 100,000 people died here, including Jews from other countries who had been herded into the Riga Ghetto after most of the indigenous Jewish population had been wiped out. Today the site is marked by monumental sculptures and a museum, with the former locations of the barrack buildings outlined by white stones. To get there take a suburban train in the direction of Ogre and alight at Darzini station from where a clearly signposted path leads to the memorial, a walk of about fifteen minutes.
