Emergencies
Latvia has a major organized crime problem, but though the mafia are highly visible in the smart bars and restaurants of Riga, their activities are unlikely to impinge on the average visitor. Theft is the biggest hazard you're likely to face, and if you're staying in a cheap hotel it's better not to leave valuables in your room. Muggings and casual violence are not unknown in Riga, but you can minimize the risks by avoiding the backstreets after dark. Latvian police ( policija ) are unlikely to speak much, if any, English. No immunizations are necessary for Latvia and emergency medical care is free, though if you fall ill it's best to head for home if you're able to do so as the country's medical facilities are run-down.
