After the sands of the Piana del Sele, the Cilento coast is fairly rocky territory, more suited to scuba-diving than sunbathing, though it does have sandy moments. AGROPOLI , the first town you reach, fifteen minutes out from Paestum, is a good base for the ruins (buses every hour), and its blend of the peaceful old quarter, heaped on a headland, and the new modern centre down below makes for a nice place to spend a few days, with a vivacious main-street passeggiata. The beaches aren't great - dirty on the north side of town, crowded to the south in the Lido di Trentova - but you can swim from the flat rocks in the harbour and the water's perfectly clean. Agropoli is also on the main Salerno-Reggio railway line and there's an excellent youth hostel , about one kilometre's walk from the station and conveniently close to the bus stop for Paestum, at Via Lanterna 8 (tel 0974.838.364; March-Nov; L15,000/?7.75), which does full dinners for L14,000/?7.23, or half-meals for L7000/?3.62.
