Immediately south of Paestum, the coastline bulges out into a broad mountainous hump of territory known as the Cilento - one of the remotest parts of Campania, thickly wooded with olives and chestnuts. The region divides into two distinct parts: inland, which is still wedded to a fairly traditional way of life, and the coast, which is where tourists go - although even in the main resorts you'll find far fewer people than further north.
