The southernmost province of Calabria - Reggio - is, in some ways, the apotheosis of all that makes the Italian south so distinctive. Encapsulating many of the problems to be found throughout the region, it is a place where hope has run out, stymied by the obstacles that stifle every initiative. Significantly, emigration from this part of Italy has long been the highest, and continues to be high, though with the narrowing of the international job market the number of escape routes is constantly diminishing. At the same time the land itself, once the heart and soul of the southern peasant culture and economy, is increasingly being abandoned in the face of low returns and high expectations - no one expects to share in the get-rich-quick society by tilling fields. Misery and delinquency are more evident here than in other parts of the south, earthquakes more frequent, the landscape more extreme in all ways, with dilapidated villages lying stranded among mountains, which are themselves torn apart by wide fiumare , or riverbeds - empty or reduced to a trickle for nine-tenths of the year, but swelling with the melting of the winter snows to destructive torrents.
