The northern stretch of the Tyrrhenian coast takes in both Calabria and Basilicata, of which the latter - a brief mountainous slice - is the most inspiring stretch and probably the most visited part of the entire region, its sheer cliffs and rocky coves refreshingly unspoilt by the holiday industry. The obvious stop here is Maratea , hemmed in by the mountains and offering some first-rate beaches, which get overcrowded in summer. Once in Calabria, the holiday complexes intrude on the mainly mountainous littoral, though there are some absorbing places to break the journey, notably the towns of Diamante, Belvedere and Amantea , and plenty of good swim-stops in between. Following the coast down, the main SS18 runs alongside the railway line, though the frequent trains don't always stop at smaller places.
