The interior of the province of Matera has a great deal in common with Potenza province - a wide, empty terrain, much of it given over to agriculture and pasture, much of it good for nothing in particular. Run-down, depopulated, its bare clay hills appear, in Carlo Levi's words, "a sea of white, monotonous and treeless", dotted with solitary villages that are cut off from each other and the rest of the world. Little to recommend for an action-packed tour, then, but plenty of the timeless atmosphere portrayed by film-makers like Rosi and Bertolucci.
