Roundwood

The swifter, less mountainous route, to Glendalough from Dublin or Bray is via ROUNDWOOD (one of the stops on the St Kevin's bus service ); a pleasant enough village, though not in the heart of the mountains. It's just a mile from the Wicklow Way as it passes south of Lough Dan and, Glendalough and Laragh aside, is one of the few places to get a range of food and accommodation in this part of the county.

You can get B&B accommodation here at Tochar House (tel 01/281 8247; GBP33-40/?41.90-50.79), a good, central option, which also has pleasant dorm bunks in an annexe catering for hikers and cyclists (GBP15/?19.05). Slightly further out are two other B&B options: Woodside (tel 01/281 8195; GBP33-40/?41.90-50.79), a mile and a half along the Dublin road, and Ballinacor House (tel 01/281 8168; GBP26-33/?33.01-41.90), a mile along the road towards Glendalough. The village also has a campsite (tel 01/281 8163; closed Oct-Easter). Your eating choices in Roundwood are limited: there's

one fast-food outlet; bar food at The Coach House ; or you might try The Roundwood Inn (tel 01/281 8107), a seventeenth-century coaching inn which is noted for its excellent, but pricey food in the restaurant (for which you'll need to book), and great bar meals. However, for a wider range of accommodation, and for readier access to lonelier and more impressive scenery, your best bet is probably to head on down to Laragh, six miles southwest of here .
