GLENDALOUGH - the valley of the two lakes - is one of the standard and very popular bus tours out of Dublin. Its famous monastic site is one of the most important in Ireland and, despite the huge number of visitors, the place has an amazing, quite tangible, quality of peace and spirituality. Access to the site is free, and there are numerous pleasant walks from here into the mountains. Transport to Glendalough from Dublin is easy - use the St Kevin's bus service (tel 01/281 8119), which leaves twice daily from the Royal College of Surgeons on St Stephen's Green, and returns from the Glendalough Visitor Centre car park. The bus passes through Bray, where you can pick up the train to continue your journey south. Glendalough is amply equipped to receive its many sightseers, with acres of car parking and a huge, modern visitor centre (daily: mid-March to end May & Sept to mid-Oct 9.30am-6pm; June & Aug 9am-6.30pm; mid-Oct to mid-March 9.30am-5pm; GBP2/?2.55; Heritage Card). This has an excellent exhibition and a video show that sets Glendalough in the context of the monastic ruins elsewhere in Ireland. The admission charge to the centre includes the video show, exhibition and a guided tour.
